Goodbye Pergola, Hello Trellis
Prefer to translate this page?
As mentioned in my previous posting, I have two grapevines of IAC variety. The older which is one and a half year old is growing in my front yard on a pergola (arbor) structure, made of untreated woods. I have named it the "IAC#1". Last year, September 2011, I took a tiny cutting from the IAC#1 and planted it in a pot
(pic). The 'child' has since grown vigorously in my backyard on a trellis structure
(pic) and now fruiting with 44 bunches
(pic) waiting to be harvested come November 2012.
I have pruned the IAC#1 twice, and in both occasions the fruit clusters failed to develop into edible grape
(pic) due to mites attack as I have shown in the
Disaster! posting. I did a light shoots pruning in June 2012 and now fruiting with 10 bunches.
Two different story lines - sad for the IAC#1 and glory for her offspring, the IAC#2. If only they can talk, this would be their conversation...
IAC#2: Mummy, your house is getting ugly.
IAC#1: You are right, honey. It is rotten. Our master did not treat the woods with chemical before building this ugly pergola. I am glad that he built a strong trellis for you, my child. You get better penetration of sun light so you can produce more food, which is good.
IAC#2: Is that the reason why I look more healthier than you, mummy? I am also producing more fruit than you.
IAC#1: Yeah...the rotten wooden pergola is a great heaven for mites. I am also suffering from rust fungus attack (pic) from time to time, especially, whenever my canopy gets thicker (pic) which slowed down the water evaporation after rain. The air circulation is bad and this microclimate is killing me, honey...
Ahhh...so sad. Obviously, I need to do something before the ageing ugly pergola collapse on the ground.

This is an old picture, I just wanted to show the rotten wooden
pergola indicated by the arrows. |
Building Trellis For The IAC#1

Double curtains trellis structure is now completed and tightned to the anchor.
Next, to 'migrate' (re-arrange and tying) the canes to the wires and to remove the
wood pergola. This is the most complicated part! |

| Fuhhh...done! Goodbye pergola, hello trellis.. |

| Oh, oh!! The pressure is too strong for the fractured concrete drain |

| Done. Once it gets dried, no elephant can escape when tied to this anchor. |
