This is so disappointing.
After all the hard work and patiently waiting for the next good-thing to happen, a disaster struck to my IAC grapevine. I don't have the right words to describe my frustration and anger. But I know I can't put the blame on the nature because it's how things work.
I guess this is anthracnose(?) disease, caused by fungus. I just hope the spraying with fungicide I did this afternoon can save my IAC. Never mind the flower clusters and young berries - 60% or more are gone.
It's my fault for not being alert enough for the early sign of attack.
**UPDATED on 2nd Oct 2012:
The disaster was not caused by fungus but mites - both rust mites and bud mites. I have since discovered the 'antidote' to these micro-destroyers after almost 6 months trying so many types of miticides (chemical and organic-based) but to no avail.

- Never overlook the weekly schedule for preventive spraying especially during flowering and fruiting
- Be alert for early sign of fungus attack
Good night.

**UPDATED on 30 Aug 2013:
Downy Mildew fungus on the underside of leaves.
the white powder is the residue of the fungicide spray
dark brown margin of the newly emerged (on the 9th Jan) leaf
Two Isabella Madu 's leaves adjacent to the IAC are also affected
top of the same Isabella Madu leaf showing dark brown patch, white powder is the same fungicide residue
the 2nd Isabella leaf showing yellowish patches and dark brown margin
top view of the 2nd Isabella leaf
Note: I have removed all the affected leaves and new shoots of the IAC, including the two Isabella leaves - and burned them. Should I remove the IAC flower/fruit clusters as well?

Hi Jon,
ReplyDeleteI'm not convinced it is actually anthracnose. It looks like something scorched the young leaves, because I cannot see any symptoms on the older leaves??
Did you use the spray pump to spray maybe herbicides in the past? Did you follow the directions on the product label correctly?
Will look into this further, but would love you feedback
Thanks for your comment, Danie. No, I rarely use herbicide and if I need to, I will use another spray pump. And I never use it since I planted my two grapevines. I sprayed with pesticides about 4 days before that, though - both to the Isabella and IAC grapevines. But there's no effect to the Isabella (incl. its young leaves/shoots) as in the IAC. Sunburn?
ReplyDeleteDanie,
ReplyDeleteyou were right, it's not fungus but mites!! It's been a hell of 6 months trying so many type of products both chemical and organic-based (neem oil). And finally, after consulting my local nursery last June, I have managed to control the attack trough weekly spraying of mixed miticide+fungicide.
Sifu, the grape vines here experience the sam problem as mentioned above . I just read ur blog n will apply brogard right away . Thank you so much for sharing
